Awhile back I shared with you my experience making homemade laundry detergent. We are now in our second batch and we won't turn back. Our clothes are cleaner than ever, we don't have to worry about the environmental impact of the detergent and plastic container, and the best part is we aren't spending money on detergent. When we bought the supplies it only cost around 8 dollars total. The second batch cost us nothing! We have enough supplies for a third batch. After that, the only thing we will need is a bar of Fels-Naptha which costs around 2 dollars! I am never turning back!
I was hoping to have the same experience with dishwasher detergent. I found the recipe at Moms By Heart.
I had the main ingredients Borax and Washing Soda. I had to purchase the Lemi-Shine. The Lemi-Shine is designed for people with hard water and is supposed to help eliminate any leftover residue on the dishes.
It calls for 3 cups of Borax, 3 cups of Washing soda and 1 cup of Lemishine. I cut that in half because I wasn't sold on the idea. I've read a lot of comments from users saying that it does not work that well.
I put the detergent in an old container. I had plans to make a cute and clever label.
I never got to the cute label part. This dish washing detergent is crap. After every wash the dishes were not always clean and there was a dusty film on all of the dishes. After about 5 runs of this - we were over it.
We went to Target and purchased the Method brand dishwasher tablets. They work 1000 times better. Those may not be homemade but at least we have clean dishes now.
I would NOT recommend making your own dishwasher detergent.
